Paul

Yes I too find his comments on persecution exciting and yet a bit frightening. I especially like what he says about persecution in chapter 3 (which I hope to post about tomorrow) when he discusses how the early church had to "travel light" with the core message that "Jesus is Lord."

Interesting insight; I agree that the institutional "machine" can or does get in the way, or maybe replaces our ability and need to listen to the Spirit. We end up relying on the latest model/program instead of truly being led by the Spirit.

Hirsch's comment about crisis and/or persecution providing the best opportunities for growth is both exciting and frightening. I wonder if we all aren't watching the beginning of a real crisis for the church and this book, along with others, are reminding us of ways to thrive in the coming collapse of Christendom?

In today's New Testament reading of Romans we see Paul contrasting living under the law to being guided by the Spirit. I see some similariites between Hirsch's contrasting of Christendom to post-Christendom. Christendom provided buildings, professionals, programs...perhaps to the exclusion or hinderance of God's Spirit leading and directing His movement in the hearts of His people. Somedays I long for a simple "plug and play" system. It is hard and messy to try and follow the "wind" that blows whereever it wishes...at the same time it is life giveing.
