Spiritual Transformation - Key #2

June 27, 2007 | Filed Under georges boujakly, spiritual formation |

Earlier this month my friend Georges Boujakly shared eight “keys” to spiritual transformation. These keys include:

1. Spiritual transformation is an inside job.
2. Spiritual transformation requires deliberate effort.
3. Spiritual transformation has a specific goal.
4. The goal of spiritual transformation is conformity to Jesus Christ.
5. The progress of spiritual transformation is always slow.
6. Spiritual transformation is the “business” of the church.
7. Spiritual transformation is not a luxury for the spiritually elite.
8. Spiritual Transformation is plural.

Today Georges elaborates a bit on the second key.

Spiritual transformation requires deliberate effort.

Just as to accomplish anything in life requires effort, the same is true with spiritual transformation.

Peter urges “Be serious and discipline yourselves for the purpose of prayer” (1 Peter 4:7) and “Discipline yourselves and keep alert” (1 Peter 5:8; see also 1 Corinthians 9:26; 1 Timothy 4:7-8). My point is that Peter (and Paul) believes that we ought to be deliberate about our lives in Christ. Without the effort that it takes to put the Christian on the path of spiritual growth, he will be spiritually stunted.

For too long many believed that spiritual growth just happens to us. It does not require any effort at all on our part. After all are we saved by grace and not of ourselves. Why all of a sudden does it takes effort to grow in Christ? So some people reason.
