Wow, so many things ran through my head as I read that article:
1- I wonder what the chances are that public cemeteries can be declared private property in order to prevent ‘public protests’ of this sort? There has to be a law loophole there somewhere that could help.
2- It would be nice to think that Westboro might learn some sort of lesson from this, but chances are they’ll believe that this is a sign of their doing right because ‘Christians are persecuted.’
3- Do they think that ‘God is their enemy’ too?
4- What the heck happened to Fred Phelps to make him hate gays so much?
5- It’s easy to summon up loathing for Westboro. It’s my first response. Then I simmer down and remember that these are God’s children too, in all their brokenness. I hope and pray that He moves them in some way to wake up and turn to Him.
Kay, good words. You are certainly correct about it being “easy to summon up loathing” but you are also correct about praying for them as well. I have to admit I have not done that. The church is in Topeka which is an hour from my home. I also work part-time for a group that is officed in Topeka, so we hear/see a lot about Phelps and his family.
BTW they certainly haven’t learned anything by this, last night two of the family were on 20/20 and they were up to their usual ways. In fact they were glad this happended because it gives them a bigger platform.
